In all sports, there are game changing moments, these are defining moments of either individual prowess or when a team is just on form throughout the match, nigh unbeatable. Unfortunately, Spikers were on the wrong end of these this time around as they lost 3-1 away to a well drilled Tamworth Spartans team. Our boys put in a valiant effort and fought bravely throughout but just couldn’t close out some of the games today.
The first set was taken by the home side 25-20 but Spikers pulled the scores level with the second set at 25-22. It was anybody’s game in the third set, but Spikers were unable to maintain their momentum as Tamworth took the game 25-23. The final set to see out the match ended up at 25-18. As the cliché goes, the better team won today, but the boys can be proud at playing with such drive and determination right until the very end. It is a performance that they can all be proud of, in particular Nigel Sinclair who was voted as Spiker’s MVP. Every team loses, not just in volleyball, but across the entire spectrum of the sporting world. The real measure of a team is how they bounce back after a defeat and how all team members pull together to show just how resilient they are. Nobody ever likes to lose, but losing the “right” way by never giving up and fighting until the end, that is the sort of heart that this team plays with, and guys, we’re all proud of you for it. Any first game of the season is always going to be difficult. With time spent away from both the court and teammates during the off season, sometimes questions can be raised over whether it will take time to effectively hit the ground running. Thankfully, today that question was answered in serious fashion with a spectacular 3 -1 victory over Lincoln Canons in the NVL Cup.
Spikers took the first set 25-21 but Lincoln responded by taking the second 27-25. Clearly a close second set but all to play for in the third. 25-13 was the score as Spikers took the game with what could be described as almost a masterclass in "how to drub your opponent". At two sets to one up and with the fourth set a potential decider, would Spikers hold their nerve? No doubt at all that they could! Taking the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set, the quality of the entire team shone through with Harry Sandford the man of the match.. Very special thanks to those supporters who were able to find the time to turn up to the game and, as always, the team was being cheered on by the rest of the club who were unable to make it. A shout out to the scorer and line judges as well for being able to provide their time to assist today. Next up for Spikers is an away game at Team Essex Blaze who play in the Super League – the top division of the NVL. Last season, they fell early on in the cup, but as a Super League team, they remain a threat. However, with confidence running high after this brilliant first round win, and with the support of the entire club behind them, there’s no reason why this team cannot get the same result against this opposition whilst continuing to provide the entertaining volleyball that we’ve all come to love from them. |
