"Phenomenal" is today's word that best sums up the result of the ladies NVL performance within their first fixture as they took on Ashfield Vipers and Coventry and Warwick Riga 2 taking away two wins and playing with such finesse that they didn’t drop a single set. I believe that the phrase “start as you mean to go on” can be correctly attributed here.
First up was Ashfield Vipers and there was certainly no case of any rust to shake off from the summer. The first set was taken 25-19; however, this was well overshadowed by the score line of the second set which Spikers won in sublime fashion at 25-9. The third set was a well fought contest with the two clear point rule coming into effect as Norwich took the victory with a 29-27.
The later game against Coventry and Warwick Riga 2 presented no signs of the girls slowing up. The opening set was taken at 25-20, the second at 25-16, and, not content with the home supporters’ hearts being in their mouths the first time around, the victory was taken with the same 29-27 margin as in the first match for a very well deserved win.
Agnieszka Kowalska was the standout performer as she was named the MVP across both matches. As always, thanks go out to the lines judges and to the scorers. Your time is much appreciated and no doubt you all enjoyed a wonderful day of volleyball.
With a 100% record for the win and the sets, Spikers currently top the table in the Women’s Division 3 Central League. It’s very early days yet, but a very nice sight to see especially as this sort of momentum at the start of a season can carry a team over the coming months.
The girls were absolutely on top form today and have done the club and themselves all very proud. Nobody could have asked for more from each individual, and they deserve all the accolades that we can bestow upon them.
Next up are away games against Tamworth Spartans and Loughborough Students which will provide a stern test for the ladies – a test that they can certainly pass with another A* performance like this.
